It May Look Like Growth, But It’s Not

Jul 27, 2025

In 2015, my wife and I bought a bungalow in an up-and-coming neighbourhood.

Great location, but the house… well, it had personality.

A neighbour told us the original owner was a handyman who built the place in the 60s using leftover materials.

The result?

A poorly designed house full of inefficient spaces, waste and risk.

The main structural beam was a cobbled mix of 2x10s and 2x12s. Not even close to today’s code.

Basement insulation? Misfit corkboard scraps from an old recording studio.

Closets were oddly shaped and not functional.

Cabinets barely fit anything.

We had plans to put in a secondary suite and rent the house out, so we tolerated the chaos.

But one thing was obvious:

The franken-house functioned, but nothing was standard, and it was painful.

I get that the house was built in a different time, and the owner worked with what he had.

But the idea of patching together unstandardized and inefficient parts is extremely common with contractors, today.

They take on every type of job.

  • Different scopes.
  • Different client types.
  • No consistency.

It might feel like growth, but it’s actually chaos.

And not repeatable.

When you work with similar clients with similar scopes and expectations, your estimating, pricing, scheduling, and team coordination improve dramatically.

If you don’t actively seek those clients, your growth will be inconsistent and impossible to plan for.

When the building blocks are standardized, you know exactly how to double your business size, without working yourself to death.

Uniform jobs become the building blocks for:

  • Repeatable project workflows
  • Predictable gross margin
  • Efficient crew deployment
  • Accurate estimating templates
  • Hiring for key positions
  • Scalable operations

Does that sound boring?

Well, it is.

But it’s the only way to build a profitable business that gives you freedom.

Don’t build a franken-business with scraps.

Build a company that’s more valuable—and easier to run.

Choose a niche.

Standardize and Systemize your work.

Market and Sell like hell.
